Townsfolk already drop items into your mailbox throughout the day, but the dropped items never really change. As it sits your friendship level has no reflection on what is randomly given to you in your mailbox. The only thing friendship level really does is hand you rewards every 10 levels, and those stop well before 99 anyway and only a small handful of townsfolk have other things tied to them like quests or recipes.

Pets already work the way I think townsfolk should. A pet retrieves items over time, and the higher the pet level the better the items it brings back. Leveling a pet is a permanent upgrade to what you collect every day. That is why people plan around getting Owl to 6.

I want that same tiered system for townsfolk. The higher the friendship level, the better the items they randomly drop in your mailbox. Keep the rewards at every 10 levels exactly how they are and just tier the drop pool on top of that. Each townsfolk should pull from their own area, so Cid gives mining items and Borgen gives gold items. Save the best tiers for the back half, somewhere around 70 and up, so the levels past the last rewards finally do something.

The part I like most is what it does to picking who to level. With pets you have to decide who is worth the investment because the payoff is specific. Tiering the drops would make choosing a townsfolk to push an actual decision, especially for early to mid-game players.
