So Johnny toast's model is from a game called Alan Wake, he is a writer that has writer block for 2 years. So him and his wife go on a vacation, his wife gets kidnapped by the Darkness, and it is trying to consume everything and everyone around it.
You can make the reason why Johnny hunts ghost is because he failed to save his wife's life and is trying to get her back, it would explain why he know so much about the paranormal, he is still trying, doing research, to get his wife back.
